Can We Talk About Episode 2 Though?

days copyI know it’s a week late. I wasn’t even sure that I was going to want to write another review of RuPaul’s Drag Race again… but this episode? This deserves to be talked about.

First of all, the main challenge. For the last few seasons now Drag Race has done a lip-sync performance of varying musical creations. Last year it was Glamazonian Airways, the year before it was Shade the Ru-sical, Black Swan, and the challenge where they did a lip-sync to past seasons of Drag Race. The closest season four came was with Glamazons vs. Champions episode and selling RuPaul’s albums, but really the musical numbers started around season 5. This season was a lip-sync performance in the style of Pitch Perfect in which two groups played rival acapella gangs lip-syncing RuPaul songs. It was brilliant, and really brought out how controlling Acid Betty really is, and it’s unfortunate because I really wanted to like her, and while I think she’s brilliant and she does well in the challenges her personality is really a turn off.

On the other hand Chi Chi has really surprised me this season and I’m excited to see how she does going forward. Now coming to the spoiler alert part and I can’t help it but I’m going to have to spoil it so if you haven’t watched it or care at all about spoilers (now a week later) don’t read beyond this point.

Dax and Laila really weren’t that impressive, so I can’t say that I was all that surprised when they were in the bottom. I wanted to like them both, I really did, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out.

The part that really like… had everyone gagged, was the fact that Ru sent BOTH of them home. Many were devastated, more by Laila going home than Dax mind you, but the truth is, I’ve watched this show from the beginning. I literally grew up with this show during my teen years and now my early to mid twenties, and I have to say… neither of them performed that song right. I Will Survive is a song that as Laila even says herself has a lot of emotional meaning to it.

I’m the first to admit that personally I’m not really sure what would have been the ‘right’ way to perform that song. My guess would be closer to Latrice Royale and the ‘You Make Me Feel’ Lip-sync of season 4. Latrice for the record was the one on the left that everyone couldn’t take their eyes off of.

Then there was what happened at the very end.

Ru, calling a mystery queen, and inviting her on the show.

Rumors abound, but we’ll have to wait for tonight to know who the mystery queen is. My hope is of course for Evah Destruction if it’s a new queen or Katya if it’s a queen from a past season.
