Year of Yes: Review

Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes.

I confess, I didn’t quite read this book. Actually, I happened to be going on a trip to California this past weekend, and I decided that rather than just reading the book myself, I would purchase the audiobook so that my mother (who, like me, is a huge Shondaland fan) could enjoy it with me. I also confess that having been someone who watches all of her shows, I feel just a little biased in this review, not that I’m any special publication so it hardly matters.

I suspected pretty early on when I heard Shonda Rhimes was coming out with a book that it was going to be amazing, and I knew that whatever it was, I needed to have it. When I learned that the book was actually going to be about how she learned to say yes for a year and how much that had changed her life, I knew that I absolutely needed to read this book, except it wasn’t supposed to come out until November, and being that at the time I learned of it was sometime in August (or was it June?), I kind of forgot about it for a while until early this year when I realized that it was likely her book was out already.

Both hilarious and brutally honest, Year of Yes, shares the insight of a brilliant television creator and writer in her life changing quest to say yes to everything for a year, after her older sister mentions, she never says yes to anything. Listening to Shonda tell her story through the audiobook, made it all the more fascinating because Shonda and I share a lot of the same traits, we’re both type-A, a bit high strung (I say a bit for me), arguably neurotic, driven, a little anxious at times, creative types, so in many instances it felt as though she were talking about me. I could relate to so much of what she was talking about because I’ve had had similar thoughts. Whether you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, or How to Get Away with Murder, or know nothing of her work (who even is that person?) Year of Yes is wildly inspirational and hilarious, and a great read, or listen, depending on your preference.

LOVE. Recommended Read.
